Best alternative add-ons to Genesis in Kodi

It’s been a couple of months now since it was confirmed that Kodi’s iconic plugin, Genesis, would no longer be supported.

Genesis was a groundbreaking app that helped to emphasise the power of the Kodi platform and what it could achieve. Rather than scanning from a single source, Genesis offered its users a huge database of films and TV from a large number of sources, helping to make streamed TV more reliable than it had ever been.

In addition, Genesis integrated with debrid services (such as Real-Debrid) to offer higher quality streams both in terms of definition and sound, ensuring that streamed TV could look just as good as anything that came through your standard set-top box.

A lot of these links are still live, and Genesis itself can still be downloaded, but it’s service will degrade as it’s builders have confirmed that they will no longer be working to keep links updated.

As with a lot of examples within the Kodi Community though, this is very much a case of ‘the King is dead, long live the King’

With Genesis coming to an end, a number of new add-ons have sprung up to take its place and, while a couple of them are still very new, they look very promising indeed.

This article looks at the most relevant alternatives to Genesis. That means, we’re looking at add-ons that are able to stream Movies and TV from multiple sources as well as integrating with debrid services to offer users high quality and reliable content in an easy-to-use manner.

Release Hub:
Release Hub ThumbIf you’re already have a Real-Debrid account, then we’d suggest that you check out Release Hub. It only deals in Real-Debrid links that work meaning that you get a really reliable source that only a limited number of people have access to – and as such, buffering and dropped links are hardly an issue and you get to benefit from HD video content and improved sound.

If you’re not currently a Real-Debrid user, you can sign up for a free account at www.real-debrid.com. You’ll be able to trial the service for nothing at certain hours of the day or alternatively try it out 24/7 for two weeks for just €3. If you’re a heavy viewer of movies or TV, this is definitely the one to check out.

Stream All The Sources:
SALTS_ThumbnailSALTS is arguably the most similar add-on to Genesis in as far as its functionality and the wide range of sources that it gets its content from. All TV and Movies are stored in a common-sense and easy-to-use structure and there is also a Search functionality that allows you to find what you’re looking for easily. In a nice touch, recent searches are also saved meaning that you can re-run recent searches, which is a great time-saver for those of you without a keyboard.

SALTS also supports Real-Debrid use for additional speed and reliability.

Velocity:
velocity-thumbVelocity has only been out for a matter of weeks, but I have to admit that it’s rapidly becoming my Add-on of choice for all movie and TV content. The number of sources it scrapes is still relatively small (especially to when compared to Genesis), but its early days and the updates we’ve seen so far seem to suggest that those sources will grow rapidly.

Velocity works with Real-Debrid in just the same way as Genesis did/does, but also offers additional functionality in the shape of an integration with Trakt which keeps a record of the shows you watch (across all devices) and makes recommendations on other shows that it thinks you’ll enjoy watching.
